Elizabeth Villares, Ph.D., Professor, Counselor Education at Florida Atlantic University (FAU)’s College of Education (COE), has implemented a research agenda that centers on developing evidence-based school counseling interventions, instrument development, and conducting school-based outcome research studies, most of which have examined the academic and social-emotional needs of historically underserved minority students. To fund her research, she has obtained external grants from the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Science; the American School Counselor Association; and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education’s Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration Grant Program, the latter of which provided a five-year $1.6 million grant partnership with the School District of St. Lucie County to train counselors in critical Social Emotional Learning techniques and interventions.

Over the past five years, Villares has published 14 articles in national peer-reviewed journals, two books in prestigious national publishing houses, and written four book chapters. In addition, the FAU College of Education has recognized Dr. Villares as the COE Scholar of the Year at the Professor level in 2022 and the Associate Professor level in 2016, and the COE Researcher of the Year at the Associate Professor level in 2017. She is also the recipient of the Association of Small Group Work, Al Dye Award for Outstanding Article in 2021; Association for Assessment in Research and Counseling, Outstanding Research Article of the Year in 2017; Center for School Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation Fellow in 2016; and Association for Assessment in Counseling and Evaluation, Outstanding Outcome Research Article of the Year 2011.

Dr. Villares has served in numerous leadership roles, most recently as the ACES Treasurer and over the past five years as the SACES President, FSCA Governing Board Chair, Associate Editor for the Professional School Counseling journal, and editorial boards for Counselor Education and Supervision and Counseling Outcome Research and Evaluation.
